The Atlanta Braves and San Diego Padres are in discussions on a deal that would involve starter Jake Peavy, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
According to the newspaper, a source close to the discussions said the deal would see Peavy head to Atlanta in exchange for a package of unidentified prospects.
The Padres have been shopping their ace pitcher and he has expressed interest in moving to a National League contender.
According to the Star Ledger, the New York Yankees are also interested in acquiring Peavy. A source close to the Yankees told the newspaper the team thinks the Padres are close to a deal with another club. The source also told the Star Ledger that the Yankees think they could put together an appealing package for the Padres. Last winter, the Yankees debated parting with young pitchers Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy in a potential deal for then Minnesota Twins' ace Johan Santana. It is possible one or both of those names could be used by the Yankees in a deal for Peavy.
The 27-year-old right-hander is under contract for another four seasons (2009 - $11 million, 2010 - $15 million, 2011 - $16 million, 2012 - $17 million and an option 2013 - $22 million with a $4 million buyout).
Over his 199 career starts he is 86-62 with a 3.25 ERA. Peavy won the 2007 NL Cy Young Award.

If they're shopping Peavy, I know of another team who needs some starters and should try to get in the mix....
